Shen-shou-jing (Divine Mirror)

Shen-shou-jing (Divine Mirror)
A type of mirror made in China from the Later Han to the Wei and Jin dynasties. The design on the back of the mirror is mainly composed of gods, humans, and beasts. Some gods and beasts mirrors have long inscriptions, which suggest that they express the Taoist beliefs that were popular at the time. Some mirrors also have the year inscription, which makes it possible to know the date of their production. There are mirrors with triangular or flat edges, and some with images arranged radially from the knob or arranged to be viewed from one side (double row style). The number of gods, humans, and beasts varies and is not consistent. Mirrors with triangular edges are called triangular-rimmed gods and beasts mirrors, and many have been found in ancient tombs in Japan. Based on the inscriptions, they are said to be Wei mirrors, but none have been found in China. There is an ongoing debate over the triangular-rimmed gods and beasts mirror, with both domestic and imported theories being mixed in connection with the location of Yamataikoku.
