Shimokamagari [town] - Shimokamagari
A former town in Aki District, southern Hiroshima Prefecture. It includes Shimokamagari Island, Kamikuro Island, and Shimokuro Island off the coast of Nigata, Kure City. The central settlement, Sannose, is on the east coast of Shimokamagari Island, and was an important port on the Seto Inland Sea during the age of sailing ships. The island is mountainous, and mandarin orange cultivation is thriving. A ferry boat runs between the island and Nigata. In April 2003, it was incorporated into Kure City. Area: 8.67 km2 . Population: 2,222 (2000).
