…A large peninsula that juts out from the southeast of the Asian continent, bounded to the east by the South China Sea and to the west by the Bay of Bengal. It includes Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and West Malaysia. It is located halfway between India and China, and was influenced by the civilizations of both continents, hence the name. It is said to have been coined by the English physician and poet John Leyden (1775-1811), but if this is true, the word first appeared in his work "An Essay on the Language and Literature of the Indo-Chinese Nations" (1805) written during his stay in Penang. …
