Shitaya

A district in the northwest of Taito Ward, Tokyo. The plateau was called Ueno, while the alluvial lowlands were called Shitaya. It once referred to a wide area centered around Ueno Station, and the former Shitaya Ward was established in 1878 (Meiji 11), but in 1947 (Showa 22) it merged with the former Asakusa Ward to form Taito Ward. Currently, the district is located between the old Nikko Kaido and Showa-dori, where the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line runs, and borders Negishi to the west and Iriya to the east. Shingen-ji Temple, known as Iriya Kishimojin, is located in 1-chome, and the morning glory market held around July 7th is famous.

東京都台東区(たいとうく)北西部にある地区。台地を上野とよんだのに対し、沖積低地は下谷とよばれた。かつて上野駅を中心とした広い地域をいい、旧下谷区が1878年（明治11）成立したが、1947年（昭和22）旧浅草区と合併して台東区となった。現在は旧日光街道と東京地下鉄日比谷(ひびや)線の通る昭和通りの間の地区で、西は根岸、東は入谷(いりや)と接する。1丁目に入谷鬼子母神(きしもじん)で知られる真源(しんげん)寺があり、7月7日前後の朝顔市は有名。
