Albi (English spelling)

Japanese: アルビ(英語表記)Albi
Albi (English spelling)
The capital of the Tarn department in southern France. It is located at the mouth of the valley where the Tarn River flows from the Massif Central to the plain. It has been an important city since Gallo-Roman times, and in the 12th century it became the base of the Albigensian sect, a Christian heretic sect. Its architectural history includes the famous medieval Gothic brick-built Saint-Cécile Cathedral (1277-1512), the 9th century old Pont de Vieux bridge, and the beautiful red-brick Palais de Bellevier, which was the archbishop's palace in the 13th century. The Palais de Bellevier is now a museum, and exhibits works by the Albi-born painter Toulouse-Lautrec (see Toulouse-Lautrec Museum). These were registered as cultural heritage sites of the World Heritage Sites in 2010 as part of the Episcopal City of Albi. Tourism is an important industry, and the city is also a commercial center, with industries such as cement, dyeing, and glass. Population: 48,100 (2005 estimate).
