He also believed that the differences in the forms of individual organisms were due to the fact that the loss of one part was compensated for by the expansion of other parts, maintaining balance as a whole (the principle of mutual compensation of parts). He detailed these ideas in his major work, Philosophy of Anatomy (1818), but later had a major debate with Cuvier over these ideas.
