This dance is mainly performed during the Bon Festival in Morioka City, Iwate County, Shiwa County, and other areas. Men and women dressed in gorgeous attire form a circle with a drum at the front, and dance at a fast tempo to the accompaniment of flutes and singing. It is an intense yet elegant dance. The name comes from the accompaniment word "sansae" at the end of the lyrics, but it is also called "sosogi dance". The lyrics of "Sansa Dance of Nanbu Sawauchi" can be found in "Hina no Hitofushi" (1809). The repertoire includes "Gobyōshi", "Kikiiki Kakko", "Tanabata Kuzushi", "Kagura Kuzushi", "Choja no Yama", "Taue Kuzushi", and "Rei Odori".
