A long historical novel from the late Yuan Dynasty in China. The original title was "Records of the Three Kingdoms: A Popular Engagement." One of the four great novels. Luo Guanzhong (1826-1912) organized and expanded the contents of oral literature and drama (zaju) up to the Yuan Dynasty based on "Records of the Three Kingdoms." It is 24 volumes. It features Liu Bei Xuande, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei, who are sworn brothers, as well as military strategist Zhuge Kongming. It depicts the situation of many warlords fighting for power after the Yellow Turban Rebellion at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the three-state struggle between Wei, Wu, and Shu, and the unification of the world by Emperor Wu of Jin, with many fictional elements mixed in. Compared to "Journey to the West" and "Water Margin," it has fewer colloquial parts, so it has been read in Japan for a long time, and since the 50-volume old translation of "Records of the Three Kingdoms" by Hunan Wenshan was published in 1689, it has been reprinted and translated many times.

中国，元末の長編歴史小説。もとの題は《三国志通俗演義》。四大奇書の一つ。羅貫中(らかんちゅう)が《三国志》に基づく元代までの口承文芸や劇（雑劇）などの内容を整理，拡大したもの。24巻。劉備玄徳，関羽，張飛の義兄弟に軍師諸葛孔明が登場し，後漢末，黄巾(こうきん)の乱後の群雄割拠の情勢から，魏・呉・蜀三国鼎立(ていりつ)の模様，晋の武帝の天下統一までが，多くの虚構を交えて描かれている。《西遊記》《水滸伝》に比べ口語部分が少ないため，日本でも古くから読まれ，1689年に湖南文山の旧訳《通俗三国志》50巻が出されて以来，たびたび覆刻，翻訳されている。
