British film. Produced in 1955. A postwar film directed by H. Cornelius, who, like A. Mackendrick (The Madame and the Thief, 1955), inherited the tradition of British comedy films (the so-called Balcon touch), this is a unique coming-of-age film that "captures a bizarre reality in documentary form" (Hanada Kiyoaki). It is based on C. Isherwood's Sally Bowles (1939), a story in the series Farewell to Berlin, which depicts Weimar Germany on the eve of the rise of the Hitler regime through the eyes of a foreigner, and was dramatized (1952) by John Van Druten under the title I Am a Camera.

イギリス映画。1955年製作。A.マッケンドリック(《マダムと泥棒》1955)と並んでイギリス喜劇映画の伝統(いわゆるバルコン･タッチ)を受け継ぐ，戦後派のH.コーネリアス監督作品で，〈奇々怪々ともみえる現実をドキュメンタリーでとらえた〉(花田清輝)異色の青春映画。原作は，ヒトラー政権出現前夜のワイマール･ドイツを外国人の目で描いたC.イシャウッドの連作小説《ベルリンよ，さらば》の1編《サリー･ボールズ》(1939)から，ジョン･バン･ドルーテンが《私はカメラだ》の題で劇化(1952)したもの。
