Wu Shiqian

A representative bird-and-flower painter from the Ryukyu Dynasty period. His real name was Yamaguchi Souki, his pen name was Shikei, his pen name was Unkoku, and Go Shiken was his Chinese name. In 1691, he became an artist at the Kaizuri Magistrate's Office. In 1703, he was ordered by King Sho Kei to study in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, where he studied under Sun Oku and learned realistic flower-and-bird paintings before returning to Japan in 1707. In 1715 (5th year of Shotoku), he painted Flower and Bird Paintings for the Kyoto-based Konoe Iehiro, contributing to the rise of early modern realistic painting. In his later years, he painted portraits of Kings Sho Toyo and Sho Shitsu, and also taught painting techniques to Yin Yuanliang. His works include Flower and Bird Paintings (Yamato Bunkakan).

琉球王朝時代の代表的花鳥画家。本名は山口宗季（そうき），字は子敬，号は雲谷，呉師虔は唐名。1691年に貝摺（かいずり）奉行所の絵師となる。1703年に尚敬王の命により福建省福州に留学し，孫億に師事し，写生的花鳥図を学んで07年に帰国した。15年(正徳5)には京都の近衛家熙の御用で《花鳥図》を描き，近世写生画の勃興へ寄与した。晩年は尚豊王や尚質王の御後絵(肖像画)を描き，また殷元良に画技を教えた。作品に《花鳥図》(大和文華館)がある。
