Koga County, Chuso

Japanese: 甲賀郡中惣 - こうがぐんちゅうそう

This was a county-wide uprising by local lords in Koga County, Omi Province. It is unclear when it was established, but it peaked in the latter half of the Sengoku period. Within the county, there were many local samurai lords known collectively as the 53 Koga families. They were united based on groups of people with the same surname, called "dongyo-so", but these united in small areas to form small area alliances such as the Kashiwagi Mikata-so, which was made up of the Tomo, Yamanaka, and Minobe clans, and which expanded to the size of a county to form the Koga County Chuso. Its existence can be confirmed in historical documents no earlier than the "Gunchuso Opinion Articles" of 1571 (Genki 2) in the Yamanaka documents, but judging from its close cooperation with the neighboring Iga Sokoku Ikki, it must have been established before 1562 (Eiroku 5).

近江国甲賀郡の国人土豪による一郡規模の一揆。成立時期は不明だが，最盛期は戦国時代後半。郡内には甲賀53家と総称される地侍土豪が群居した。彼らは同名惣と称する同姓集団を基礎に団結していたが，それが小地域的に連合して伴，山中，美濃部3氏による柏木三方惣のような小地域連合をもち，さらにそれを1郡規模に拡大したのが甲賀郡中惣である。その存在が史料的に確認できるのは山中文書の1571年(元亀2)の〈郡中惣意見条々案〉をさかのぼらないが，隣接する伊賀惣国一揆と密接に連携していたことから類推すれば，1562年(永禄5)以前にすでに確立していたと考えねばならない。
