At the age of 14, he became the apprentice of Yoshikawa Koshige (later known as Touchi Yuken Kumoemon) and took the name Shigenosuke, but later became a disciple of the first Kimura Shigekatsu, and was promoted to shin'uchi at the age of 25. He established himself as a leading figure in the Kanto rakugo world with his virtuoso Kanto-bushi style, which includes a sense of melancholy. At the age of 43, he became the head of the Naniwabushi Guild and trained many disciples, but in his later years, he handed over the reins to his own son Shigewakamaru as the second, and took the name Kimura Shigekatsu II himself.
