A painter from the Shuri Royal Court period. His Chinese name was Kinkasei and his pen name was Jiryo. Born deaf and mute, he is said to have learned painting techniques by himself. As exemplified by "Hakusen no Zu," many of his works look to China for themes such as imaginary beasts, Jurojin, and immortals, and the influence of Chinese painting cannot be denied. However, this is rather refreshing when you consider that most of the royal court painters after Jiryo leaned towards standardized themes such as imitating flower and bird paintings and landscape paintings from Fuzhou, China. It is also understandable that the story of the investiture envoy who came to Ryukyu to appoint the king of Ryukyu, comparing him with and praising the famous Chinese painter Gu Hutou, is also convincing. <References> Chin Genfu, "Zhongshan Jiryo Biography"
