The world's first nuclear power generation took place on December 20, 1951, at the Argonne Laboratory in Idaho, USA, using an experimental fast reactor with a steam generator and steam turbine. Argonne became the central institute for the nuclear reactor development program in the USA, and carried out the development and test programs for the boiling water reactor and pressurized water reactor, which provided the data that formed the basis of today's light water reactors, as well as various other reactor type development programs.
