Hagenbeck, C.

…A famous zoo in Stellingen, a suburb of Hamburg, Germany, founded in 1907. It was founded by Carl Hagenbeck (1844-1913), an animal dealer and owner of the world's largest circus. Since his father was also an animal dealer, he took over at the age of 22, sending animals from their native places in Africa to zoos all over Europe, and also successfully held circus shows with animals he had collected himself. The distinctive feature of this zoo was that it was the first in the world to implement a cage-free system, which removed the obstacles of cages and fences between the animals and the audience, and surrounded them with moats that prevented escape. It was also famous for its panoramic format, which gathered animals from the same continent in a certain area and combined the whole area into a single landscape, and this excellent method of exhibiting animals had a great influence on zoos opened around the world afterwards. …

…ドイツのハンブルク市郊外シュテリンゲンにある有名な動物園で，1907年に設立された。創設者は動物商で同時に世界最大規模のサーカスの所有者ハーゲンベックCarl Hagenbeck(1844‐1913)である。父が動物商であったために22歳で後を継ぎ，アフリカの原産地からヨーロッパ各地の動物園へ動物を送り込み，またみずからも集めた動物によるサーカス興行を成功させた。この動物園の特徴は，観客との間にあったおりや柵の障害物を取りのぞき，脱出できない堀をめぐらす無柵放養式を世界に先がけて実施したことであり，また，同じ大陸にすむ動物を一定の地域に集め，全体を一つの風景にまとめたパノラマ形式は有名で，すぐれた動物展示法としてその後開設された世界の動物園に大きな影響を与えた。…
