… [Hideo Kuroda]
[Early Modern Period]
In the Edo period, fields were given the following names based on the tax assessment: mulberry fields, paper mulberry fields, lacquer fields, tea fields, hemp fields, mitsuke fields, sand fields, mountain fields, no fields, slash-and-burn fields, kaeru fields, kano fields, karioi fields, nagi fields, bay fields, ogi fields, and kaya fields. In the Mino Province Land Survey Book from the middle of the Keicho era (1596-1615), mulberry and paper mulberry fields were given 13 koku mounds (1 koku 3 to per tan), the same as the upper-upper fields, and hemp and tea fields were given 12 koku mounds, the same as the upper-upper fields. In general, fields that are planted every year are divided into upper, middle, lower, lower-upper, and mountain fields according to the quality of the soil, regardless of the type of crop.
