...The number of lines ranged from one to eighteen, but gradually four or five became the standard. In the 13th century, square neumes with four staff lines came into general use and spread throughout Europe, but the Germanic Gothic neumes continued to be used for a long time. Even today, the Roman Catholic Church uses square neumes with four staff lines for Gregorian chants.
