A musical term. The degree of consonance or dissonance of intervals varies depending on the era and ethnic group, and the definition of which intervals are considered consonant intervals has changed in various ways among many theorists throughout history. In the 9th and 10th centuries, intervals considered to be consonant intervals were perfect 1sts, 4ths, 5ths, and 8ths, but gradually intervals of 3rds were also recognized as consonant intervals. Today, perfect 1sts, 8ths, 5ths, and 4ths, as well as major and minor 3rds and 6ths, are generally considered to be consonant intervals, with the former classified as perfect consonance intervals and the latter as imperfect consonance intervals.
