Karasuma family

Japanese: 烏丸家 - からすまるけ

A descendant of Fuyutsugu of the Northern House of the Fujiwara clan. A distinguished family. The family name comes from the fact that they lived in Karasuma, Kyoto. For this reason, many nobles bore the name Karasuma, but it was not until the Muromachi period, when Toyomitsu, the second son of Gon Dainagon Hino Sukeyasu, inherited the name. In the Edo period, they were initially awarded 1,500 koku, later 954 koku, and served the Imperial Court as a family of waka poets for generations, producing many excellent poets. Among them, Mitsuhiro, the son of Jundaijin Mitsunobu, served two emperors, Goyozei and Gomizunoo, as a poet under Hosokawa Yusai, and played an important role in court culture.

藤原氏北家冬嗣の流れ。家格は名家。家名は京都の烏丸に住したのによる。このため烏丸を名のった公卿は少なくないが，子孫世襲して称するようになるのは，室町時代，権大納言日野資康の二子豊光から。江戸時代には初め1500石，のち954石を給せられ，代々歌道の家として朝廷に仕え，多くのすぐれた歌人を出した。なかでも准大臣光宣の子光広は細川幽斎門下の歌人として後陽成･後水尾2代の天皇に仕え，宮廷文化のなかで重きを占めた。
