...In China, this is a holiday to worship a shrine (a land god). It is generally held twice a year, in spring and autumn, but the date varies depending on the era. During the Tang Dynasty, it was held on the fifth day of the month of Earth (Tsuchinoe) after the beginning of spring (beginning of autumn). All the villagers took a day off work and gathered at a shrine in the grove, where they offered sake and meat, then ate and drank the offerings and enjoyed the day. Kagura (Sacred Dance) was also widely performed. At the spring shrine, prayers were made for a good harvest, and at the autumn shrine, thanks were given for the harvest and fortune-telling was done about the next year's crops. This shrine festival was abolished during the Yuan Dynasty and rapidly declined. ...
