Charadriiformes, Scolopacidae. Total length 29-33cm. Similar to the Common Snipe, but slightly larger, its head has black stripes on the lateral, eye, and cheek lines, and pale yellowish brown midline, brow, and chin lines. Its back has blackish brown vertical stripes on a yellowish brown background, and its neck and chest have dense black stripes on a pale brown background. Its abdomen is white, with brown horizontal stripes on its sides. The undersides of its wings have gray-brown flight feathers, and the under-wing coverts have wavy black and white stripes. It breeds in the Ussuri region, southern Sakhalin Island, and shrubby grasslands and marshes of Japan, and winters in southeastern Australia and Tasmania. During the breeding season, it flies high in the sky, making a unique call that sounds like "jijijiji, zubyaku, zubyaku," and performs a display in which it cuts through the air with its stiff tail feathers, making a "gagagaga" sound as it swoops down. Due to this ecology, it has the common name of "Thunder Sandpiper". In Japan, it breeds from Hokkaido to the northern part of Kyushu, lives on the plateau in the southern part, and on the plains in the northern part. (→ Wading birds)

チドリ目シギ科。全長 29～33cm。タシギに似ているが，やや大型で，頭部は黒色の頭側線，過眼線，頬線と，淡黄褐色の頭央線，眉斑，顎線とが縞模様をつくっている。背は黄褐色地に黒褐色の縦斑があり，頸や胸は淡褐色地に黒い斑が密にある。腹部は白く，脇には褐色の横斑がある。翼の裏は風切羽が灰褐色で，下雨覆羽が白と黒の波状の縞模様になる。ウスリー地方やサハリン島南部，日本の灌木の生えた草原や湿原で繁殖し，オーストラリア南東部やタスマニア島で越冬する。繁殖期になると，「じじじじ，ずびゃーく，ずびゃーく」と聞こえる特有の鳴き声を発して大空を大きく飛び回り，硬い尾羽で風を切って「がががが」という音を立てて急降下するディスプレイを行なう。この生態からカミナリシギという俗名がある。日本では北海道から九州地方北部で繁殖し，南部では高原に，北部では平地に生息する。（→渉禽類）
