Kazutami Ukita

A political scientist from the Meiji to Taisho eras. A leading thinker in the early days of the Taisho democracy movement. Born on December 28, 1858, as the son of a samurai from the Kumamoto domain. Graduated from Kumamoto Western School and Doshisha English School (the precursor to Doshisha University). Studied abroad at Yale University. After working as a professor at Doshisha University, he became a professor at Tokyo Senmon Gakko (the precursor to Waseda University) in 1897 (Meiji 30). He taught at the school until 1941 (Showa 16), while also actively engaged in critical writing. In particular, as editor-in-chief (1909-17) of the representative general magazine Taiyo from the latter half of the Meiji period to the Taisho period, he advocated the unified promotion of domestic policy = constitutionalism and foreign policy = imperialism (economic imperialism), and played the role of a theoretical pioneer of democracy. One of his representative works is Ethical Imperialism (1909, Ryubunkan). He died on October 28, 1946.

明治から大正時代の政治学者。大正デモクラシー運動初期の代表的な思想家。安政(あんせい)6年12月28日、熊本藩士の子として生まれる。熊本洋学校、同志社英学校（同志社大学の前身）卒業。エール大学に留学。同志社大学教授を経て、1897年（明治30）東京専門学校（早稲田(わせだ)大学の前身）の教授に就任。その後1941年（昭和16）まで同校で教鞭(きょうべん)をとるかたわら、評論活動を精力的に展開。ことに明治後半期から大正期の代表的な総合雑誌『太陽』の主幹（1909～17）として、内政＝立憲主義と、外交＝帝国主義（経済的帝国主義）との統一的な促進を唱導し、民本主義の理論的先駆者としての役割をも果たした。代表作として『倫理的帝国主義』（1909・隆文館）がある。昭和21年10月28日死去。
