Bonshun

Japanese: 梵舜 - ぼんしゅん
Bonshun

A Shinto priest in the early Edo period. Also called Ryugen. The son of Yoshida Kanemigi, head priest of the Yoshida Shinto family, and the younger brother of Kanemi (1535-1610), he first studied Shinto and later became a monk. He was the head priest of Shinryu-in Temple in Yoshidayamashita, Kyoto. After the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he and his brother Kanemi were instrumental in the founding and running of Toyokuni-sha Shrine. Later, he lectured Tokugawa Ieyasu on Shinto and promised to teach him Shinto. In 1616 (Genwa 2), Ieyasu was buried in a Shinto funeral at Mount Kuno, Shizuoka, in accordance with his will. He also frequently copied classical texts, and made a great contribution to the preservation of the classics. His diary, "Shunkyu-ki" (also known as "Bonshūn Nikki"), is a valuable historical source for understanding the central situation at the time.
