This refers to free online shops operated by Tokyo-based BASE Corporation, or the web services for running shops on BASE in general. The service was launched in November 2012, and as of February 2014, over 70,000 online shops were being operated. It is not a shopping mall format like Rakuten, but rather an independent mail-order shop format. The company's co-founder is Ieiri Kazuma, a businessman who ran in the Tokyo gubernatorial election in February 2014.
BASE makes it extremely easy to operate an online shop in a short time. Users who want to set up a shop go to the BASE website and enter the URL of the shop they wish to set up, their email address, and a password. The entered shop URL is followed by a pre-prepared domain, which becomes the shop's URL, and with just this step the setup process is complete.
There are no annual fees, registration fees, or fees for sold items, and the number of items that can be registered is unlimited. Customer access records and past sales records can also be checked. However, there is a separate fee for card payments.
In order to meet the needs of users who want to make their BASE shops as original as possible, programs (plug-ins) for customizing the shop's functions and design can be obtained from a site called "BASE Apps."
BASE Apps offers a variety of plugins, including plugins that allow you to make your shop's URL your own domain, SEO services to help your shop appear at the top of search results, plugins that allow you to create an original shop logo, easy issuing of discount coupons, product storage, packing, delivery services, etc. Another reason for its popularity is that it offers the same services as paid original shops that generally take dozens of days to build.

東京のBASE株式会社が運営する無料のネットショップ、または、BASEでのショップを運営する際のウェブサービス全般を指す。2012年11月にサービスを開始し、14年2月時点で、7万以上のネットショップが運営されている。楽天のようなショッピングモール形式ではなく、自主通販ショップの形態をとっている。同社の共同創業者は、14年2月の東京都知事選に立候補した実業家の家入一真。
BASEでは、非常に簡単に、かつ短時間でネットショップを運営することが可能となっている。ショップを開設したいユーザーは、BASEの専用サイトから、開設したいショップのURLと、ユーザーのEメールアドレス、パスワードを入力する。入力したショップのURLの後に、あらかじめ用意されたドメインが付加されたものが、ショップのURLとなり、これだけの操作で、開設作業は完了する。
年会費、登録費、売れた商品に対する手数料などが不要であり、登録可能な商品数も無制限。顧客のアクセス記録や、過去の売買記録の確認もできる。ただし、カード決済については別途手数料がかかる。
なお、BASEショップを少しでもオリジナル性の高いものにしたいというユーザーのニーズに応えるため、「BASE Apps」と呼ばれるサイトから、ショップの機能やデザインをカスタマイズするためのプログラム(プラグイン)を入手することもできる。
BASE Appsでは、ショップのURLを独自ドメインにするものや、検索結果の上位に自分のショップが表示されるよう工夫するための「SEO」対策サービス、ショップのオリジナルロゴが作成できるもの、割引クーポンの簡単発行、商品の保管、荷造り、配送代行サービスなどの様々なプラグインが公開されている。一般的に、数十日かかって構築される有償のオリジナルショップと同様のサービスが利用できる点も、人気の要因となっている。
