Eumenides

Japanese: エウメニデス（英語表記）Eumenides

Another name for the Erinyes, the Greek goddesses of vengeance. Meaning "goddesses of mercy." In the tragedy of the same name by Aeschylus, the Erinyes possessed Orestes, who had murdered his mother, and brought him to Athens tormenting him. They then brought him to Athens to be tried by Athena on the Areopagus Hill, where they were worshipped as Eumenides in exchange for releasing Orestes.

ギリシア神話の復讐の女神エリニュスたちの別名。「慈愛の女神たち」の意味。同名のアイスキュロスの悲劇によれば，母を殺害したオレステスに取りついたエリニュスたちが彼を苦しめながらアテネに来て，アレオパゴス丘上でアテナ女神に主宰される法廷の裁きを受け，その結果オレステスを放免する代償にアテネでエウメニデスとして祭祀を受けることになったのが，この呼び名の由来とされる。
