A ceramic that exhibits semiconductivity. Semiconductivity occurs when the chemical composition of a pure substance changes slightly depending on the temperature and atmosphere, and when trace elements are present, these elements cause lattice defects. Examples of the former include Zn 1+δ O and Co 1-δ O. In both cases, a change in the partial pressure of oxygen changes δ, and thus the electrical conductivity. A typical example of a material that contains trace elements is barium titanate BaTiO 3 (a trace amount of lanthanum (III) oxide La 2 O 3 ).
