Antigorite - Antigorite (English spelling)

It is the most common of the so-called serpentine minerals, and is the main component of serpentinite. It is clump-like or leaf-like, and pure clumps have a smooth texture. It occurs as a decomposition product of ferromagnesium minerals in ultramafic or mafic plutonic rocks, as a decomposition product of forsterite and monoclinic humite in skarn, and as an epigenetic mineral in carbonatite (an igneous rock composed of carbonate minerals). It does not coexist with quartz. Its name comes from the Italian place name Antigorio, where it is found.

いわゆる蛇紋(じゃもん)石鉱物中もっとも普通の種で、蛇紋岩の主要構成鉱物。塊状ないし葉片状で、純粋な塊は滑らかな感触がある。超塩基性ないし塩基性深成岩の鉄苦土鉱物の分解物、スカルンの苦土橄欖(くどかんらん)石、単斜ヒューム石の分解物、カーボナタイト（炭酸塩鉱物からなる火成岩）中の後成鉱物としても産する。なお石英とは共存しない。名称は、産地のイタリアの地名アンティゴリオAntigorioに由来する。
