Flying Dutchman

Japanese: さまよえるオランダ船 - さまよえるオランダせん（英語表記）Flying Dutchman

This is the most representative ghost ship told of by European sailors. It appears only on stormy nights in the seas around the Cape of Good Hope, and those who see it are said to suffer bad luck. According to legend, a Dutch captain named Van der Decken boasted that he could navigate even in storms, which angered the gods and led him to wander the seas for eternity. Many real sightings have also been reported, including one famous sighting by King George V of England on July 11, 1881, when he was a naval officer.

ヨーロッパの水夫たちに伝えられる幽霊船の最も代表的なもの。喜望峰周辺の海に，しかも嵐の夜にだけ姿を現し，これを見た者は凶運に見舞われるという。伝説によれば，オランダ人船長ファン･デル･デッケンVan der Deckenが嵐の中でも航海できると豪語して神の逆鱗に触れ，永遠に海上をさすらうことになったという。実見談も多く報告されており，イギリス国王ジョージ5世が海軍士官時代の1881年7月11日に目撃した例などが有名。
