...If there is no particular craftsman in a village, or if there is a craftsman but he is a kamin of another jajman and cannot obtain services from him, he may form a jajmani relationship with a craftsman who commutes from a neighboring village, or receive services from a traveling craftsman. This jajmani relationship was mentioned by Edward Arthur Henry Blunt, who was in charge of the census survey of the United Provinces of North India, in the 1908 census of the province and in his book The Caste System in North India (1931), and Max Weber, who used the census report, discussed it somewhat in his book Hinduism and Buddhism. It was the American missionary William Henricks Wiser who recognized this as the "jajmani system" and developed it in detail. He discovered it while doing missionary work in a village in the United Provinces in the 1930s, and published a pamphlet titled The Hindu Jajmani System (1936). *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Wiser, WH" are listed below.
