...However, during the reign of Ramón Castilla (in office 1845-51, 55-62), who abolished slavery, political stability was relatively high. In 1872, against the backdrop of the booming guano industry, the first civilian in the history of the Republic, Manuel Pardo (in office 1872-76), came to power. However, the policy of promoting economic development by borrowing from abroad using guano as collateral had already collapsed by this time, and when the Pacific War with Chile broke out in 1879, the political control of the newly established bourgeoisie aristocracy crumbled, and Peruvian politics was once again passed over to the hands of the military.
