Shojokoji Temple

This temple is located in Nishitomi, Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is the head temple of the Jishu sect and is called Fujisawa Totaku Muryokoin. It is commonly known as Yugyoji. It was founded when the 4th abbot, Yugyō Shonin Donkai (1265-1327), accepted the faith of Fujisawa Shirotaro and, with the help of his secular brother, Matano Goro Kagehira, the lord of Matano, he built Seijōkoin (Fujisawa Dojo) on the site of the abandoned Gokurakuji Temple in 1325 (Shochū 2), with Kagehira as the founder. According to temple legend, in 1356 (Shohei 11, Enbun 1), Ashikaga Takauji donated 60,000 kan of temple land to the temple, and Emperor Gokogon gave the temple a plaque, changing the name to Seijoko-ji Temple. At that time, Jishu monks accompanied the battles around Kamakura, providing the samurai with ten final prayers before committing seppuku, burials and memorial services, and helping them escape. The 12th abbot, Sonkan, was the grandson of Emperor Kameyama, and Ashikaga Yoshimochi provided laborers and horses to facilitate their travels around the country. Tokugawa Ieyasu also donated 100 koku of land to the temple. The temple has been burned down and rebuilt many times, especially in the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923), when the entire mountain was destroyed, but it has since been rebuilt and a magnificent main hall and bell tower have been built. Within the temple grounds are a monument (nationally designated historic site) for the enemy soldiers killed in the Uesugi Zenshu Rebellion (1394), a temple bell with the inscription "Enbun 1," and the graves of Judge Oguri and Princess Terute. The temple treasures include a colored silk painting of Emperor Godaigo, a painting of Shonin Ikko, Rokujikyosan, and a Jishu death register (all of which are nationally designated important cultural properties). On January 12th, the first tribute ceremony for Shonin Yugyo is held, on April 21st to 24th, Donkai, and the spring and autumn memorials for founder Ippen are held on September 21st to 24th.
