Indian painting - Indian painting
The following three points are worthy of special mention in the history of Indian painting. (1) Wall paintings in the shade of rocks and on rock faces These are thought to have begun around 10,000 years ago. They are mainly found in central India, and include the Bhimbetka Caves, which were discovered in 1973 and are world-famous for the number of rock paintings they contain. These caves are sparsely colored and depict scenes of hunting, fighting, dancing, and other subjects. (2) Wall paintings in cave temples The Ajanta murals are world-famous for their large Buddhist themes, but other examples include murals at the Ellora, Cannery, and Badami caves. Cave paintings began before Christ, but painting flourished after the 6th and 7th centuries. In the Middle Ages, when cave painting ceased, painting shifted to palaces and private residences, and the paintings gradually became extremely small. (3) Miniatures in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Periods Illustrations of Jain scriptures began in the 11th century, and from the 15th and 16th centuries to the first half of the 19th century, Hindu Rajput painting, based on the traditional techniques of ancient mural painting, and Mughal painting, influenced by Islam and Persia and specializing in secular painting, developed brilliantly.
