A resort and hot spring town on the eastern shore of Lake Bourget in the Savoie region in southeastern France. Population 25,000 (1990). Due to its topography, it enjoys a warm climate and abundant sunshine. Aix means water, and Bain means baths. Located at the entrance to the mountainous region before the Alps, it is the largest town in France, with 48,000 visitors a year for treatment. Remains of Roman baths and other facilities remain.
