Japanese: 竜涎香 - りゅうぜんこう

Also known as ambergris. A gray or brown waxy mass that forms in the intestines of sperm whales, containing the mouthparts of squids that it has eaten, it is considered to be a kind of pathological stone caused by these creatures. It is hardly soluble in water, but is soluble in alcohol, and when dried and soaked in alcohol, it has a musk-like scent and has been prized since ancient times as a fragrance. The aromatic component is ambreine C ₃ (/0)H ₅ ₂ O, which also contains aldehydes and ketones. Since the ban on whaling, production has dropped sharply, and in recent years synthetic ambreine oxide has been used.

アンバーグリスとも。マッコウクジラの腸内に生ずる灰色ないし褐色の蝋状塊で，捕食したイカの口器などが含まれるため，これらに原因する一種の病的結石に近いものとされている。水に難溶だがアルコールに溶け，乾燥後アルコールに浸けたものは麝香(じゃこう)に似たかおりをもち古来香料として珍重。香成分はアンブレインC₃(/0)H₅₂Oで，他にアルデヒド，ケトンなどが含まれる。捕鯨の禁止以降生産量は激減し，近年では合成アンブレイン酸化物が用いられる。
