[Human skin]
Like other mammals, humans have skin that functions as a protective barrier, regulates body temperature, and provides secretions and excretion, as well as sensations, and its structure is the same as other mammals: it consists of the epidermis on the surface and the dermis that underlies it. (Note: Below the dermis and between the muscle and the skin is a relatively coarse-grained connective tissue called the subcutaneous tissue, called the tela subcutanea, but some people include this subcutaneous tissue in their skin.)
