In the Edo period, this referred to the amount of rice produced by a high-ranking peasant. It was also called kokudaka, but the amount of tax and other duties paid was determined by the amount of rice produced, and because some farmers could not run their businesses without an amount of 5 to 10 koku, this became an important indicator among peasants. The shogunate (and even feudal lords) considered 10 koku/1 chobu to be the ideal scale of business, and imposed restrictions on the division of farmland owned by peasants through the Land Division Restriction Order.
