French flutist. Born in Saint-Amour, a mountain village in eastern France. After graduating from the Paris Conservatory, he served as principal flutist with the Orchestre de Pasdeloup, the Paris Conservatory Orchestra, the Opera Comique, and the Concertos Straram. He was also active as a soloist and in chamber music, and is considered one of the greatest virtuoso flutists of the 20th century, establishing modern flute playing. He was a professor at the Paris Conservatory from 1932 to 1949. In 1934, he was awarded the Legion of Honor. He emigrated to the United States in 1949 and passed away in Brattleboro, Vermont. He perfected a dignified performance style that made the most of the characteristics of the flute, and had an enormous influence on younger generations. He visited Japan in 1973 and 1977 to teach.
