A city in the mid-west of Tokyo. In 1995, Akigawa City and Itsukaichi Town merged and changed their name. It occupies the Akito Plateau and small hills between the Tama River and Akigawa, as well as the mountainous area of the former Itsukaichi Town. Vegetables are grown and chickens are raised, and the mountains produce cedar, making the lumber industry thriving. The Itsukaichi Line runs through the city, and residential development is progressing, and with the opening of the Ken-O Expressway, factories have also moved in. The Akigawa Valley in the upper reaches of the Akigawa River is part of Chichibu Tama Kai National Park and has become a popular tourist destination. 東京都中西部の市。1995年秋川市と五日市町が合併,改称。多摩川と秋川の間にある秋留台地と小丘陵および旧五日市町域の山地を占める。野菜栽培,養鶏が行われ,山地では杉材を産し,製材業が盛ん。五日市線が通じて住宅地化が進むほか,圏央道の開通により工場も進出している。秋川上流部の秋川渓谷は,秩父多摩甲斐国立公園に属し,行楽地となっている。南部の秋川南岸にはレジャー施設〈東京サマーランド〉がある。73.47km2。8万868人(2010)。
