A city in the mid-west of Tokyo. In 1995, Akigawa City and Itsukaichi Town merged and changed their name. It occupies the Akito Plateau and small hills between the Tama River and Akigawa, as well as the mountainous area of the former Itsukaichi Town. Vegetables are grown and chickens are raised, and the mountains produce cedar, making the lumber industry thriving. The Itsukaichi Line runs through the city, and residential development is progressing, and with the opening of the Ken-O Expressway, factories have also moved in. The Akigawa Valley in the upper reaches of the Akigawa River is part of Chichibu Tama Kai National Park and has become a popular tourist destination. The leisure facility Tokyo Summerland is located on the south bank of the Akigawa River in the south. 73.47 ^km2 . Population 80,868 (2010).
