Abandoned place - Misutechi

Japanese:
Abandoned place - Misutechi
During the Edo period, this was land that was exempt from all public taxes and dues, other than red seal land and jiyochi. Also called "misatoba," it was excluded from land surveys. Graves, places to dispose of dead cattle and horses, crematoriums, etc. were considered "unclean objects and should not be presented to the Jito" ("Chiho Hanreiroku") and were therefore not to be recorded in the land survey books, so they were not subjected to a pole-in during land surveys and were placed outside the rope as "misato" (abandoned land). In addition to this, roads, rivers, banks, ditches, etc. were also included as "misato" (abandoned land) outside the rope. These were not recorded in early land survey books, but later came to be recorded in the outside land survey books as "misato" (abandoned land) or "pogai" (abandoned land).
