Petrovsk-Port until 1921. Capital of the Republic of Dagestan, North Caucasus, southwest of Russia. A port city located on the western coast of the Caspian Sea, at the northern foot of the eastern Greater Caucasus Mountains. Founded as a fortress in 1844. Currently one of the major ports on the western coast of the Caspian Sea, timber, oil, grain, sugar, cotton, etc. are shipped, and it also serves as a fishing base. There are oil fields nearby, and it is the end point of an oil pipeline from Grozny, and there are refineries and oil storage facilities, as well as industries in machinery, textiles, food (fish processing, wine), and cement. It is the educational and cultural center of Dagestan, with the University of Dagestan (1957), agricultural, medical, and educational universities, the Academy of Sciences, and the local museum. A main railway and highway run between Rostov-on-Don and Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The current name of the city commemorates the Dagestani revolutionary Makhachi Dahdaev. 1921年までペトロフスクポルト Petrovsk-Port。ロシア南西部,北カフカス,ダゲスタン共和国の首都。大カフカス山脈東部北麓,カスピ海西岸に位置する港湾都市。 1844年要塞として建設された。現在カスピ海西岸の主要港の一つで,木材,石油,穀物,砂糖,綿花などが積出され,漁業基地ともなっている。近郊に油田を控え,またグロズヌイからの石油パイプラインの終点で,製油所や石油貯蔵施設が立地するほか,機械,繊維,食品 (水産加工,ワイン) ,セメントなどの工業がある。ダゲスタンの教育・文化中心地で,ダゲスタン大学 (1957) をはじめ農業,医学,教育の各大学,科学アカデミー,郷土博物館などがある。ロストフナドヌーとアゼルバイジャンの首都バクーを結ぶ幹線鉄道,ハイウェーが通る。現市名はダゲスタンの革命家マハチ・ダハダエフを記念したもの。人口 57万7990(2010)。
