Gargle

A typical way of thinking in comic writing. Originally it meant "digging a hole" or "pointing out a hole," in which case "hole" refers to defects found in all aspects of social life, and when it appears in a personal way, it refers to a person's habits or temperament. "Ugachi" is praised for being the first to point out a hole that would otherwise go unnoticed. The attitude of "Ugachi" is generally irresponsible, and since it is a way of thinking solely for the purpose of making people laugh, there is a gap between it and "satire" or "moral teaching."

戯作(げさく)の発想法の代表的なもの。本来「穴をうがつ（穿つ）」とか「穴をいう」ことの意で、この場合「穴」とは社会生活万般においてみいだされる欠陥をさし、それが個人的に現れる場合はその人の癖や気質をさすことになる。「うがち」はその欠陥を鋭く指摘することで、ややもすれば気づかれずに放置されている穴をいち早く指摘するときに、その「うがち」は賞賛される。「うがち」の姿勢はおおむね無責任であり、あくまで「笑い」のための発想法である以上、「風刺」や「教訓」との間には懸隔がある。
