1869‐1954 French archaeologist. In 1901, together with Breuil, he investigated the cave paintings at Les Combarrels, proving for the first time the existence of Paleolithic art, and in the same year discovered the cave paintings at Fonds de Gaume. He subsequently excavated many Paleolithic sites, including La Ferrassie and Laugerie-Haute, making a major contribution to the study of Paleolithic culture.
