Tinplate Paint

Japanese: トタンペイント

Paint for galvanized steel roofs. Usually boiled oil, long oil alkyd resin, and modified acrylic resin are used as binders. The term "galvanized steel paint" is not included in the JIS paint terminology. It seems to have become common from the name "XX galvanized steel paint," which was a product name in Japan. Since zinc is more chemically active (easily ionized) than iron, zinc oxide is generated and tends to create a dense passivation on the steel sheet, so it is important to prepare the base before painting.

トタン(亜鉛めっき鋼板)製の屋根に塗る塗料。通常展色剤には，ボイル油，長油アルキド樹脂，変性アクリル樹脂が使用される。トタンペイントの語はJISの塗料用語にはない。日本での商品名の一つであった〈○○トタンペイント〉の呼名が一般化したものらしい。亜鉛が鉄よりも化学的に活性である(イオン化しやすい)ため，亜鉛の酸化物が発生して鋼板上に緻密（ちみつ）な不働態をつくりやすいことを考慮して，塗装前の素地ごしらえをすることがたいせつである。
