Loach scooping - Loach scooping

Japanese:
Loach scooping - Loach scooping
This dance is based on the folk song "Yasugi-bushi" from Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture. The performers cover their cheeks with a hand towel, wear a sash, and wear kimono on their hips. They dance with a basket and scoop up loaches. The humorous movements make this dance very popular. It seems that the gesture of scooping up small fish has been considered humorous since ancient times. The late Heian period "Shin Sarugaku-ki" lists "Ebisukitoneri no Ashizukai" as a performance of "heartbreak," and "Ebisukitoneri no Ashizukai" appears in "Ryōjin Hishō."
