Tughril Bek

The first Sultan of the Seljuk Empire. Reigned from 1038 to 1063. Tughril means "hawk" in Turkish. He was the grandson of the founder of the Seljuk Empire. Together with his brother Chaghri Beg and his uncle Musa Yabg, he led a group of Turkmen (Turkmen) peoples, crossing the Amu Darya in 1035 and advancing westward. In 1038 he entered Nishapur and established a dynasty. In 1040 he defeated the Ghaznavid army in the Battle of Dandanakhan. In 1055 he entered Baghdad and was the first in history to receive the title of sultan from the Abbasid Caliph, officially recognizing him as the ruler of the eastern Islamic world.

セルジューク朝の初代スルタン。在位1038‐63年。トゥグリルとは，トルコ語で〈鷹〉の意。始祖セルジュークの孫にあたる。兄弟のチャグリー･ベク，叔父のムーサー･ヤブグとともにトゥルクマーン(トルクメン族)集団を率い，1035年にアム･ダリアを越えて西方へ進出，38年にニーシャープールに入って王朝を開き，40年ダンダーナカーンの戦でガズナ朝軍を破った。55年にはバグダードに入って，アッバース朝カリフより史上初めてスルタンの称号を受け，東方イスラム世界の支配者として公認された。
