Chandigarh (English spelling)

Chandigarh (English spelling)
A city located in northwest India on the border between Punjab and Haryana. It is the capital of both states, and is a federal territory (area 114 km2 , population 1,054,686 (2011)) including the surrounding area. It was just a small village, but after India gained independence in 1947, it became necessary to build a city to replace Lahore, which had belonged to Pakistan. Le Corbusier designed it at the request of the Indian government, and construction began in the early 1950s with Edwin Maxwell Fry and others, and it was almost completed in the early 1960s. It is a typical planned city, with residential areas divided into rectangles of about 1 km2 by roads and green areas, a shopping street in the center, and necessary public facilities. The state assembly, government buildings, assembly halls, etc. are located in the north, and industrial areas are separated by green areas in the southeast. The artificial Sukhna Lake, which uses a river flowing down from the Shibalik Mountains, has also been completed in the northeast. It is a beautiful city with a beautiful landscape against the backdrop of the Himalayas. In 2016, it was registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the "Architectural Works of Le Corbusier: Outstanding Contributions to the Modern Movement," which consists of 17 buildings from seven countries around the world. Population: 960,787 (2011).
