Loggerhead turtle - Akaumigame (English spelling)

A turtle of the order Testudins, family Chelonidae. It is found in temperate and subtropical regions around the world. It is a large sea turtle with a reddish-brown carapace. It has five pairs of ribs, but there are variations such as four or more pairs, and sometimes there are no pairs. The first rib is usually in contact with the top carapace. There are usually two pairs of frontal plates. It is omnivorous, eating mollusks, crustaceans, sea urchins, starfish, sponges, jellyfish, and large plankton and seaweed. When fully grown, it weighs 200 kilograms and has a carapace length of over 1.2 meters. The Pacific coast of Japan is an important spawning ground, and spawning landings can be seen from May to early August, with the northern limit being around 37 degrees north latitude. The average number of eggs laid at one time is about 120, and the same female will lay eggs several times during the season, at intervals of about two weeks. It takes 50 to 60 days for the turtles to hatch. The eggs are eaten, and the meat is also eaten in some areas, but in recent years, the resource has declined significantly due to the deterioration of the spawning environment, and there is a trend toward international protection. In Japan, local governments also prohibit the capture of loggerhead turtles through conservation ordinances and fishing regulations. In 1967, the loggerhead turtles and their nesting grounds on Ohama Beach in Hiwasa Town, Kaifu County, Tokushima Prefecture (now Minami Town), were designated as regional natural monuments, and in 1980, the loggerhead turtles and their nesting grounds on Omaezaki Beach in Shizuoka Prefecture were designated as regional natural monuments.
