A type of leather craft. Leather is made by softly tanning the hides of animals such as cows, horses, deer, and monkeys. It is different from leather, which means raw hides with hair from animals such as tigers, bears, and wild boars, and leather, which means processed hides made by removing the hair and oils and hardening them. Leather is mainly used for dyeing, and deer leather is the most common. To dye with a pattern, a stencil with the pattern cut out is placed over the leather and the dye is applied. Dyed leather with a pattern is also called painted leather. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
