A continent believed to have spread from present-day China to Southeast Asia after the late Precambrian period. In the late Paleozoic era, it is known as the area that produces fossils of the Cathaysia plant group, represented by Gigantopteris (a fossil of a large fern-like leaf). Parts of it sank several times from the Paleozoic to the Mesozoic eras, but became land again around the end of the Tertiary period. Cathay is derived from Khitan, and is another name for China.
