An infectious disease seen in women, it is a cellulitis of the connective tissue that fills the gaps around the uterus, bladder, and rectum between the pelvic wall, pelvic floor fascia, and pelvic peritoneum. It is also called pelvic fibrosis. The main cause of this disease is the invasion of bacteria through the abundant lymphatic vessels from the uterus, but bacteria can also reach the area directly through a cervical laceration. Therefore, in addition to cases where the disease develops from damage to the soft birth canal during childbirth, it can also be triggered by infection after induced abortion or intrauterine manipulation such as a contraceptive device. The onset of the disease is relatively slow, and in mild cases there are no noticeable symptoms.

女性にみられる感染症で，骨盤壁と骨盤底筋膜，骨盤腹膜の間で，子宮，膀胱，直腸の周囲間隙を埋める結合組織の蜂巣炎。骨盤結合組織炎ともいう。ここには子宮からのリンパ管が豊富に分布し，これを介して菌が侵入することがおもな原因であるが，菌が頸管裂傷から直接達することもある。したがって分娩時の軟産道損傷から発病する場合のほか，人工妊娠中絶後の感染や，避妊器具などの子宮内操作も誘因となる。発病は比較的緩慢で，軽症の場合はめだった症状を欠く。
